  • 2 lbs potatoes Fresh potatoes are preferred.
  • 1 lb ground beef Choose good-quality ground beef.
  • 1 cup shredded cheese Cheddar or your choice.
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup Check the label for gluten-free options.
  • 1 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Butter for greasing the dish

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Peel and slice the potatoes thinly, to around 1/8-inch thick.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion and minced garlic. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup with the milk and half of the shredded cheese.
Layering and Baking
  1. In the greased baking dish, layer half of the potatoes, followed by half of the beef mixture, then half of the creamy soup mixture. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients, finishing with another layer of soup.
  2. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour. After that, uncover and add the remaining cheese on top. Bake for an additional 15 minutes until bubbly and golden.
Serving
  1. Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a crispier topping, broil the casserole for a couple of minutes after baking. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
