Homemade French Onion Dip

Ingredients
  

Onion Mixture
  • 2 large large yellow onions About 500g, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter 30g
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Creamy Base
  • 1 cup sour cream 240g
  • 4 oz cream cheese 113g, softened
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 30g, optional
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Slice the onions into thin slices for even caramelization.
  2. In a medium pan over medium heat, melt the butter slowly.
  3. Add the sliced onions to the melted butter, stirring to coat.
  4. Reduce heat to low and cook the onions slowly for 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add a pinch of salt to help release moisture from the onions.
  6. Once golden and soft, stir in the minced garlic for the last few minutes.
  7. Transfer the cooked mixture to a plate to cool completely.
Mixing
  1. In a bowl, combine sour cream, cream cheese, and mayonnaise, mixing until smooth.
  2. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and salt.
  3. Gently fold in the cooled caramelized onions into the creamy mixture.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning as desired.
  5. Chill the dip for at least 1–2 hours before serving.

Notes

Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. To reheat, microwave in short intervals until smooth.
