Method
Preparation
- Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
- Cut the French bread into thick slices, about an inch thick. Arrange these slices in the greased baking dish, overlapping them slightly.
Custard Mixture
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and cinnamon until smooth, around 2-3 minutes.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices and press down gently with a spatula to ensure the bread soaks well.
- Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Baking
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the covered dish for 30 minutes, then remove the cover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
- After removing from the oven, sprinkle sugar on top and caramelize it with a kitchen torch until golden.
Serving
- Cut into squares and serve warm, optionally pairing with fresh fruit or whipped cream.
Notes
For best results, use quality French or artisan bread. Avoid overbaking to prevent dryness.
