Method
Preparation and Caramelization
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Melt the butter and sugar in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat, stirring until the mixture is bubbly and turns a deep golden color.
- Cut the apples into halves or thick quarters and arrange them in the skillet, allowing them to soften slightly in the caramel.
Baking the Tart
- Cover the apples with the puff pastry or pie dough, tucking the edges down around the apples.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
Flipping and Serving
- Remove from the oven and let the tart rest for about 10 minutes.
- Place a plate over the skillet, hold both tightly with oven mitts, and flip them in one confident motion.
- Serve warm, optionally with cream or vanilla ice cream.
Notes
Letting the tart rest helps the caramel settle and makes flipping easier. Use a heavy, oven-safe skillet for best caramel results. If the caramel turns bitter, adjust the heat carefully while cooking.
